That tradition of warm hospitality and open studio conviviality continues to this day. Artisans in and around Putney, located in southeastern Vermont, will once again roll out the red carpet to visitors and shoppers during their Annual Holiday Craft Tour.
This year, Nov. 28 through 30, marks the 30th anniversary of the tour, New England's oldest continuous open studio event. The enduring attraction of the tour is the opportunity for visitors to meet the artists on their home turf, witness the process of creation of the
various crafts, at a leisurely pace.
The artisans on the tour work in a wide variety of media, including blacksmithing, bookbinding, quilting, furniture making, glass-blowing,jewelry, metal artistry, and photography. Some of the artists will be actively demonstrating their craft.
Visitors will find in each of the 27 studios a range of unusual gifts, the chance to meet the artist at work and in the process of transforming raw materials into work that is genuine, functional, often
whimsical, occasionally thought provoking, and always beautiful.
Maps of this free, self-guided tour are available at the Putney General Store in Downtown Putney, the Putney Coop or the Green Mountain Spinnery at Exit 4, as well as at each of the well-marked studios.
You can take a virtual tour online at www.putneycrafts.com. The tour is free of charge and runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Nov. 23 through 25. |
