The Taste of Civilization The Taste of Civilization

Sure, it's known as "a footpath in the wilderness." But even on the Long Trail, there are times when a self-sufficient hiker can use a hot meal and a cold drink.

Over the course of 270 miles, hikers pass several opportunities to connect ever so briefly with civilization. One popular spot is found just north of the Camel's Hump summit. The trail plunges down to U.S. Route 2 in Jonesville where the Jonesville Country Store offers tasty sandwiches and a chance to replenish your pack.

Hungry hikers devour delicious burgers and strawberry shortcake before heading back In Clarendon, the trail crosses VT Route 103 within a half mile of the Whistlestop Restaurant. Hungry hikers devour delicious burgers and strawberry shortcake before heading back to the freeze dried stroganoff.

Down the trail at Stratton Mountain, the sandwiches at Partridge-in-a-Pantry Deli draws hikers in as does the all-you-can-eat buffet at Grizzlies Restaurant at the Resort.

For more info about the Long Trail, visit the Green Mountain Club. Or, to learn more about Vermont's Country Stores, check out the Vermont Alliance of Independent Country Stores.
